What project management software does
Project management software runs a project. It handles tasks, schedules, documents, drawings and requests for information, and sometimes the cost of that one job. It is scoped to the project in front of you, and within that scope, it can be highly effective. What it does not do is provide a complete view of the business that owns it.
What construction ERP does
Construction ERP runs the organisation that delivers the projects. It carries cost across every job at once, not one at a time. It handles procurement and subcontracts, connects project activity to accounting and payroll, manages contracts and commercial change, holds compliance, and reports at the portfolio level to the people responsible for overall business performance. The project is one view within the system, not the boundary to it.
Where the line blurs
Plenty of project management tools have added modules over the years and now position themselves as ERP solutions. The honest test is simple. Can the system run your commercial and financial reality across the entire business, or does it mainly coordinate the work on a single job? Marketing language will not tell you that. The data model will.
Which one do you need?
If you deliver a single project and your commercial requirements are straightforward, project management software may be sufficient. If you operate a business with many projects, subcontract chains, variations, payroll, compliance obligations and a board that wants to know where the portfolio stands, an ERP is a better fit.
